Sacrament of Confirmation

Full initiation in the Church includes Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Pastoral practice over the years and among different parishes and even regions of the country has often blurred the important relationship these three sacraments have together. Confirmation has frequently been used as a rite of passage for adolescents, even though this is not the intent of the sacrament.

Currently, Confirmation preparation and celebration at St. Thomas the Apostle takes places for youth in grades 9 and older. The young person is invited to select a sponsor who helps support them in this process. Monthly preparation sessions are part of the Faith Formation for All program on Wednesday evenings.

The goal is to help youth experience the sense of full initiation in the Christian way of life and help them share in the responsibility of the life of the parish community. Youth must be baptized before beginning preparation for this sacrament.

Parents and youth preparing for Confirmation are expected to:

  • Be registered members of the parish and active in the life of the community as they are able.
  • Participate in the Faith Formation for All Wednesday evening program and other parish ministry opportunities.
  • Participate in the sacramental preparation process and the celebration with the group.
